Engeström, knots and nodal points

A few weeks ago, at the mLearn conference I have attended a very interesting keynote lecture by Professor Yrjö Engeström one of the main exponent in Activity Theory. The title of the keynote was "Wildfire Activities: New Patterns of Mobility and Learning".

He analyzed new modes of learning that characterise emerging communities and networks of social production or peer production, such as community of bird-watchers, volunters of the Red Cross or skateboarders.

While the movement in traditional apprenticeship learning is centripetal (from periphery toward centre of mastery and authority), and in standardized mass production settings the main movement is linear (from initiation to completion of an assignment or process); in wildfire activities the dominent movement is pulsing (gathering and dispersing, gathering and dispersing). For instance, volunteers of the Red Cross gather al the time there is an emergency, or bird-watchers will gather depending on the bird migration.

I find Engeström's talk interesting because he was looking at less traditional learning settings, stressing the importance of the social aspects in these learning processes.

So I started gathering information about his research on wildfire activities. He was also referring to his last book "From Teams to Knots".I started wondering about many things. First of all, What does he mean by "knots"? Would this theory be relevant for what we are looking at?

I started looking at his book but the very last part about wildfire activities is not further developed there. So while looking at resources on the net I found a few interesting things:

- I found out that he is not the only Engeström looking at social activities and networked learning, here an interesting video of Jyri Engeström. He talks about nodal points. Are these similar to waht Yrjö calls Knots?
- founded out about many other interesting talks in the 12th CHI Nederland conference, like this one by Kars Alfrink

I'll keep looking but I thought to keep track of these foundings, or maybe I should say "leave traces" about them as both Y. and J. Engeström say?

Maybe more to come, or maybe I'll move this stuff about work on a different place...

Ora solare: lancette avanti o indietro? trucco norvegese

La Norvegia appratiene allo stesso fuso orario dell'Italia e anche qui si rispettato ora solare ed ora legale. Quindi anche noi qui abbiamo dovuto cambiare ora nella notte tra sabato e domenica.

Domenica sera avevamo qualche amico a cena ed una di loro Bjørg (norvegese DOC) ci ha raccontato di un trucco che usa leiper ricordarsi se le lancette vanno tirate avanti o indietro.

Lei usa la matafora dei vasi in giardino. Mi spiego meglio.

In autunno, quando inizia a fare freddo, bisogna portare indietro i vasi, metterli al riparo dalla neve e dal freddo.
In primavera invece quando le giornate sono piú calde i vasi vengono messi fuori, portati in avanti.
Ecco, lo stesso vale per le lancette ;-)

Viaggio e conferenza a Telford, UK

Ormai é una settimana che son tornata dal Regno Unito come avevo anticipato, e piú di preciso sono stata a Telford, vicino Birmingham.
Giá Birmingham International airport é proprio dove sarei dovuta arrivare, ma visto che il mio volo da Trondheim ha avuto due ore di ritardo, ho perso il secondo volo. Quindi a Copenhagen ho cercato di cambiare volo e cosí son volata a Manchester. Fortuna che il mio L. contattato prontamente mi ha controllato che ci fossere treni! Nel caso servisse anche a voi controllare i treni in UK ecco qui il link della National Rail Enquiries.

Ad ogni modo, non ogni male vien per nuocere. Infatti alle 6 del mattino in aereoporto a Trondheim ho potuto assistere ad un'alba dai colori mozzafiato (chissá se questa foto ne rende l'idea?)


Poi ho potuto prepararmi per la presentazione che avrei fatto il giorno dopo e se non l'avessi fatto in quel mometo non avrei piú avuto tempo!

Finalmente dopo qualche peripezzia sono arrivata a Telford giusto in tempo per assistere all'ultima presentazione della giornata e farmi un'idea di cosa mi avrebbe aspettato.
Poi cena presso l'Enginuity museum, un museo davvero interessante soprattutto per i bambini dove si possono sperimentare un sacco di cose (funzionamenti di dighe, la meccanica di ingranaggi, la produzione di energia elettrica, etc.). Qui abbiamo assistito alla musica e alle danze degli Ironmen and Severn Gilders. (Ho provato a fare qualche foto ma sono tutte mosse, date un'occhiata al sito per farvi un'idea). Questo museo si trova non lontano da Ironbridge, un paesino proprio carino dove siamo tornati il giorno dopo (dopo la presentazione;-)) per ammirare il ponte di ferro (Ironbrindge mica per altro!) e le viuzze strette che si arrampicano sulla collina. Ecco un paio di foto.

Un targa lí vicino diceva: "The first iron bridge in the world, designed by the architect Thomas Prtichard in 1775 and built by Abraham Darby III in 1777-79. It was intended to be an advertisement for the skills of the Coalbrookdale ironmasters, and it proved a spectacular success. Artists and engineers came from all over the world to marvel at it, and Abraham Darby was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Society of Arts. Thomas Pritchard died before it was completed."

Ed in effetti questo ponte é davvero interessante da vedere non sará il ponte di Verrazzano a NY, ma é spettacolare a suo modo.


Ironbridge é davvero un paesino, poche case ed una vicina all'altra, talmente vicine che le stradine sono cosí strette che puó capitare di trovare cartelli come questo che dice "Unsuitable for wide vehicles", cioé "Inadatto a veicoli larghi".
Beh che dire, é stata davvero una gita piacevole grazie anche alla piacevole compagnia









p.s. Ho modificato alcuni settings ed ora dovrebbe essere piú semplice commentare, o almeno credo...

Stranezze

Chi l'avrebbe mai detto?!

Sono a Birminghm, UK. Mi trovo in un Apple Store e questo post lo scrivo da uno dei mac a disposizione dei clienti!

Questa settimana

Oggi presentazione di prova per quella che faró in UK per una conferenza, poi nel pomeriggio pilot testing per il progetto di qui vi ho giá parlato qui.

Domani altri test, lezione, poi ho una valigia da preparare e se riesco mi farebbe proprio piacere andare alla lezione di yoga.

Mercoledí vado in Inghilterra, a Telford, per mLearn conference

Giovedí presenteró il mio paper.

Venerdí ultimo giorno di conferenza. Speriamo avanzi il tempo per un giretto in centro.

Sabato torno a Trondheim dal mio L. Questa volta non riusciamo a passare dalla nipotina che vive a Londra, che peccato!

E poi probabilmente un altro weeekend di lavoro. Ottobre si prevede duro!

Come promesso ecco alcune informazioni sul progetto che stiamo svolgendo.
Ma prima di tutto un GRAZIE a cicciuzza per aver passato parola!

Il titolo del progetto " Smart phone meets Smart food"

Di cosa si tratta? Ecco una breve descrizione (in inglese)

"In the near future Radio Frequency Identity (RFID) chips will become cheap enough to be included in the packaging of consumer goods. Such an identity tag will make it possible to identify the precise production site, time and process of the item, and to relate an item to extra information about company, brand, ratings, consumer advice etc. Together with GPS, Bluetooth, WIFI or RFID in the environment it is also possible to know the global and local position of the product.

For this project we will assume that food packaging includes a RFID tag, and that smartphones have RFID reading capability. You could stick you phone in your fridge and register what products you have, what expiry dates they have, and compare this with your average consumption as a shopping guide. In the store there is WiFi and the groceries are RFID tagged. If you bring a grocery up to you phone you might see further information about the goods, and suggestions for recipes, alternatives, special sale items etc.

What would the GUI for such an application be?"

Il nostro compito é di progettare un sistema per telefoni cellulari che ipotizziamo essere in grado di leggere queste etichette RFID. L'idea é che se fossimo in grado di tener traccia di quel che abbiamo in cucina, semplicemente passando il telefono vicino al frigorifero o alla dispensa, allora potremmo facilmente tener traccia di quello che dobbiamo comprare o meno.

Noi dobbiamo disegnare la GUI, cioé Graphical User Interface, ovvero l'interfacca di questo sistema. Si tratta di un'applicazione interattiva, touch-screen. Noi dovremmo produrre solo un prototipo dimostrativo. Il processo é interesante, dobbiamo coinvolgere potenziali user, scoprire cosa potrebbe servire loro, testare il sistema con loro per capire cosa va bene e cosa no, etc.
